Equal Exchange coffee demo

Just last year I reconnected with Tom Wilde at the West Coast offices of Equal Exchange, I would consider them my first real "client". After a few short conversations, Hive Distribution was hired to do coffee and chocolate demos at the New Leaf natural markets in Capitola, Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, and Fairfax. The demos went great with the help of my friend Lyndsey, and and an example from Kevin Hollander, the Northern California sales rep.

2nd annual "Gone Til November" winter movie series. South Lake Tahoe B4BC benefit!!

Last year I threw this movie series together at the very last minute. Local South Lake Tahoe businesses were very helpful and generous. We raised nearly $1,500 for the Boarding for Breast Cancer Foundation. This year were shooting for 3 to 4 times that. I'd love to see between $6,000 to $10,000 raised and donated.

So I am currently accepting teasers, trailers, and sponsors for the 2nd annual series. We will be showing 2 to 3 movies every Tuesday night for 7 weeks starting November 3rd, 2009. There is plenty of room for sponsor banners and tents, and you will be able to sell your video at the showing with a portion of sales going to B4BC. My goal is to make this movie series the place to premier your movie in South Lake Tahoe.

For those of you who didn't know...

I've been keeping something primarily to myself for a while. I 've told a few select , and special people. just over a year ago, I was diagnosed with cancer. Stage 4 colon cancer to be exact. I was in the middle of the "I lost me to meth" ad campaign for Encompass Media Group, and the state of California. I was 85% done with the job and weighing in at 128 pounds. Now I am 6'1" and usually weigh 175/180. I couldn't physically work any longer, and the stress of this particular job was immense. I had to pull the plug on the job, and I thought my business was finished. My main contact at Encompass didn't really help the situation, it took months to get paid, and when I finally did get paid, it was about $2000,00 less than what it should have been. I was just sick of calling and calling trying to get paid. I needed to make things stress free.

I went through months of depression, living in Huntington Beach, such a beautiful place, how could that be? Basically I came from nothing, no money, no brothers or sisters to partner with, and rocky relationships with both parents. I built Hive Distribution from the ground up. It started a long time ago in Oregon and Seattle when I was doing distribution of coffee beans for Equal Exchange, and doing postcard distribution for GoCard. I was nurturing my snowboarding career with odd jobs in the spring and fall.

After moving to Orange County, I met a great man that hired me to do some decorative painting in very high end houses. He took me under his wing and mentored me with Hive, and gratefully let me go to get Hive Distribution off the ground. He is an amazing man, who has done just about everything. That year(2007) Hive generated nearly $100,000 in revenue. It still is the most money I have ever made in one year. I look forward to getting the back business back off the ground soon.

In the meantime, you can find me surfing Rodeo beach, building kayaks or chillaxin by the pool at my new house in Marin County with my good friends Pam, Meg. Ross, and the animals. Initially, I feel more at home here, than anywhere else I have ever lived.

Cody Rosenthal

Just recently Mammoth Superpark has been claiming A LOT of people. First my friend Tammy Varner broke her back and had to spend numerous days at Reknown in Reno, NV. I went to visit her, and found her surrounded by friends. I brought her flowers, which according to her was the first time she ever got flowers from a guy(I doubt that), and some Arizona Ice Tea which was her request.

Now Cody Rosenthal has done the same thing. I don't know Cody, but I definitely feel for him. He has no insurance, and surgery and rehab bills can really stack up. I was able to donate a measly $20.00 through paypal. While I was on Facebook, I was contacted ny my friend Lael Gregory(angry inch) who works at Core Orthopaedic in North San Diego County. After a very short conversation Lael offered to take care of Cody Pro Bono. We were a day too late, he had already had surgery, but hopefully they can connect to get Cody started on physical therapy, and the road to riding again. I want to thank Lael, and Core Ortho for being so generous, and I look forward to seeing a lot more of Cody in the future.

free time

since I have high-tailed it out of South Lake Tahoe (thank god), I am getting settled in to Marin, and finding myself with a lot of free time. I recently went to the Inbound Marketing Summit in San Francisco courtesy of Bryan, and Socal Action Sports Network. If there was one thing I took from that it was "publish your way into the public eye" mostly through blogging. So I am going to have a go at it in order to increase Hive clientele, and to help the people that have been helping me out. After this it got too busy for me to take any more pictures. The Hive crew was moving bottles of Sunkist 6 coolers full at a time to the Sunkist truck. We had a perfect cycle of bringing full coolers and taking back the empty ones to be filled. The truck has wireless access which allowed the consumers of the soda to immediately participate in an under the cap game at one of the trucks 6 computer terminals. Those who had to wait got to watch action sports videos on the the trucks flat screen TVs

Schmoozapalooza

Hive got a great opportunity to provide staffing for the Malakye.com "Schmoozapalooza" job fair at the Action Sports Retailer trade show in San Diego. The job fair went off without a hitch, and the lines to get some face time grew as companies like Burton, Volcom, Quiksilver, Hurley, and others were all on hand interviewing potential prospects.
